I'm not a fan of the existing behavior, but it has the advantage of not
requiring any time of the coders since at least 2.6 -- not counting new
versions of shared libraries, which would have to be dealt with no
matter what the design.

"for some reason" -- I have no inside information, but I'll guess the
devs feel that rewriting something that works, even if the design is not
optimal, is a lower priority than fixing bugs, adjusting to the vagaries
of the supported operating system versions, and adding new features.
They give _very_ generously of their time. I know we all appreciate
their labors, and I for one trust that they are doing what is best.

It seems like every new user is confused about column widths, and that's
understandable. But once they are directed to the particular FAQ, they
can get on with their work.
