ALERT for somebody new. Gnucash is slightly odd in that you do not 
(cannot) set report parameters until after the report exists. So you 
FIRST open the report (default settings) and then use edit => report 
options to change the parameters to what you want/need. I strongly 
suggest that for each report you plan to use, explore the parameter 
options available. AFTER EXPLORING, if you can't find settings that do 
what you want, ask.
