p.s. - re-installing an OS is a buldozer compared to tweasers addressing 
a splinter. I think of it as a last resort. And in this case, it would 
not have solved anything. That path should really be reserved for a 
fresh upgrade to a new version, or an attempt to fix a major corruption.
