ya, I like this idea, but it would be clearer if you didn't group
everything that isn't current and local as "other"-- perhaps "external
guides", "tutorials", etc?

right, but unnecessary clicking is required to find something other than
"current documentation" if you put everything in the "other" section.

as long as it is three clicks or less, you are fine, IMHO.

I like what the python folks have done with their doc page:
