Data is stored in ~/.gnome/GnuCash and ~/.gnucash

gnucash --nofile

none

They are stored in the same directory where your data file is.
Put your data file in a subdirectory and the backup/log files
will move there. You can also change how long logs/backups
are kept. The default is 30 days, but you can tune that as you
see fit.

But that would require the user to somehow tell gnucash where to store
backups, and it also could cause a problem if you happen to have two
datafiles of the same name. It's just much cleaner to put backups
and logfiles into the same directory as the data file.

        a) you know it exists
        b) you know it is writable
        c) you know the data file name is unique (in that directory)

If the log files bother you, tune the backup days down to something
you consider more reasonable.
