Oops, should have mentioned which versions are used in Debian unstable:

0.0.4 appears to have been superceded in Debian already.
0.1.2 is in unstable - it's waiting for libgsf before it can go into testing.
In turn, libgsf is overdue because applications like gnumeric haven't yet
moved to libgsf 1.13.3.
http://bjorn.haxx.se/debian/testing.pl?package=libgsf
(the reference to libgoffice-1 on that page is misleading, the goffice package
>= 0.1.2 is libgoffice-1-1 which replaces libgoffice-1.)
(There's no version of goffice in stable.)

Now testing on Debian unstable with:
$ pkg-config libgsf-1 --modversion
1.13.3
$ pkg-config pango --modversion
1.8.2
$ pkg-config gtk+-2.0 --modversion
2.6.10
$ pkg-config libgoffice-1 --modversion
0.1.2
$ pkg-config qof-1 --modversion
0.6.0

(testing using external QOF - not that this should matter. This goffice-update
branch doesn't have lib/libqof, it uses the conditional build in src/backend
and src/engine instead but that shouldn't matter either).

checking for QOF, version >= 0.6.0... yes
checking for GTK - version >= 2.6.0... yes
checking for pango version >= 1.8.0... yes
checking for GSF... yes
checking for GOFFICE... yes
