Could you please describe in more detail what you did and
what result you got? Otherwise it is not possible to say what could
have gone wrong.

This depends on your OS. If you use windows, you could just download
the latestet version from www.gnucash.org (atm this is
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gnucash/gnucash-2.2.8-setup.exe) and
install it. 

On most other OS you should probably just use the latest version which
is available via the package / update manager of your system.

You could also just download the sources and compile the program
yourself, but this may become a little bit more involved.
