I've now committed both of your patches to gnucash SVN (because I was more 
impatient than Derek - sorry). I applied first your March patch, then your 
2008-06-06 patch with the addition of one DIST_SUBDIRS line in 
src/optional/Makefile.am.

I hope it's fine for you to send patches based on what is now in gnucash SVN.
