account type for pension plan

If it's straightforward (no price lookups etc), I would probably use a
plain Asset account.  When you pay money into the plan:

Dr Pension Plan (asset)
   Cr Cash

If you get statements telling you how the plan is performing, then you
can adjust the pension plan accordingly, something like:

Dr Pension Plan (asset)
   Cr Cash
