Maybe that's related to your problem. If not, please run gnucash from a 
command line and tell us what the output on the console is.

I compile 1.6.6 myself. But the 1.6.5 shipped by suse works fine as well. I 
would have expected the suse packages to be enough, so that you don't have to 
compile *anything* yourself. Yes,  I know that compiling can be quite a PITA, 
sorry...
