The way multiple currencies is handled in gnucash has changed quite
significantly between the 1.6 and cvs versions. The 1.6 (and earlier)
versions require an interim currency account. CVS version can handle the
transer (almost) transparently.
If you don't want to take the risk of using a development version (and
there are risks, although a number of people appear to be using it
without problems), I suggest you wait until the 1.8 version is released
(hopefully late this year or early next, but don't quote me on that!).

Dave, have you entered that bug you mentioned into bugzilla? Please do
so if it isn't there already (see the news item on www.gnucash.org for
the url).
