This is what I did eventually.  At first I tried to find this gnome1.4 
development environment thinking it was packaged with that name, or 
something similar.  I gave up and did what you did, and started installing 
in response to errors.  A lot easier.

Yeah, I couldn't find it because I was looking for libtool-devel.  But 
looking for libltdl3 it's found.  Until I found it, though, I didn't know 
the name to search for.
