Mixing Gnucash versions

I'm running Gnucash 1.6.x on my desktop, and 1.8.11 on my notebook, and
would like to alternate work on both, as the situation dictates. I was
planning either to rsync the files back and forth, or maybe get fancy
and use Coda, but it occurs to me - will the different Gnucash versions
even be able to read each other's files like this? I'd rather avoid
upgrading my desktop's Gnucash if possible.
