If I remember correctly, some of the extra/ different accounting had to do with vesting. Sometimes the employer contribution is only yours if you work for x years. When that happens you really do not have income and you do not really have an asset. My wife's plan is of this type. Personally I ignore the vesting issue. Dale Alspach
