Strange orphan behavior on creating new transactions

Yes, that is the only time one would have the opportunity to change the 
account anchoring the transaction to the current register.  It seems, 
then, that your problem does not occur with a split view.  I would not 
have experienced the same problem.  I have mine set to auto-split.
