Can't delete a transaction

When are you trying to delete transactions? There are instances where
an import operation leaves phantom transactions visible in the
register (start the import, tell gnucash to ignore certain
transactions, finish the import) -- transactions appear on the screen
that aren't really in the datafile (the supposedly ignored imports).
If you say to yourself, 'hey, wait a minute, that transaction wasn't
supposed to be imported,' and try to delete it, the deletion will
have no effect on the register display. If you close gnucash and
reopen it, the phantom transactions no longer appear in the register.
I can't make this happen 100% of the time, so it's pretty hard to
nail it down as a bug. And I'm generally using some really old gnome
bits, so I might have an odd dependency interaction.
Otherwise, the Delete button on the toolbar ought to delete either
the selected transaction or the selected split -- possibly with the
do-you-really-want-to-delete-this(split | transaction)? warning
before actually performing the deletion.
