Can't process a payment

Well, your other option is to "Edit Account" for each real top-level
level account under "Root Account", and then change it to a top level.
Then you can delete the (empty) Root Account.

Note that you can quit without saving..  Or use the most recent
backup .xac file that GnuCash created.
