I've never seen that before, personally or via the mailing lists.

Your mail implies that there is a gnucash installed into /usr/ as well
(thus necessitating the qualification of /usr/local/bin/gnucash).  I
don't know why, but having an install in both /usr and /usr/local/
doesn't work in strange, subtle ways.

If you want to install a development version, install it into (something
like) /opt/gnucash/unstable/.  Or, since it's a stable release, install
into /usr directly.  Use the '--prefix' option to ./configure to control
the installation prefix.
