Its referenced in those thread, but to save the effort of searching...
on linux, Edit->Preferences->Files->Compress Files.
Interestingly, the wiki refers to this as being fixed at
http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Windows#Todo, but the link doesn't
actually go anywhere. ymmv.
