Thanks for putting me right on that.  Must ensure that I check an entry
before leaving it :-)

Oh dear!  See what I mean about checking entries :-)  Of course, I did
mean 2.2.1 and 2.2.3.

Tell me, though, why did my attempt to install 2.2.3 from source fail?  I
installed 2.2.1 from the LinuxMINT distribution CD.  So if the libraries
were present, what caused the problems?
