Point of non-automatic scheduled transactions?

Novice question: when I create a scheduled transaction there are tick boxes
for "Create automatically" and "Notify me when created". Ok if I tick them
it does what it says. But if I don't tick them, what happens when the date
comes around?

If nothing happens what use is the scheduled transaction? I presume there is
something somewhere which highlights that there is an outstanding
transaction not entered?
