Looking for a cash tool

Ian,
Thanks for your reply. Think of my requirements as a simplistic
checkbook register, much the same as what gnucash already provides.
However, it would not be history, it would always be looking from
"today" into the future. It would also allow for simple deletion of
items already past. I would also be able to simply enter the "actual
opening balance" each week.
For example, this week I might have
date item dr cr bal
11/26 opening balance 99.50
11/27 groceries 50.00 49.50
11/28 pay 1000.00 1049.50
11/28 to savings 275.00 774.50
12/02 mortgage 750.00 24.50
12/15 gift 19.00 5.50
Next week, I would come in and correct the balance to actual, remove
items already past, and readjust for the future
date item dr cr bal
12/05 opening balance 19.95
12/05 casino winnings 2500.00 2519.95
12/05 to savings 1500.00 1019.95
12/15 gift 1000.00 19.95
Does that explain it more clearly?
Thanks,
Jim

Jim,
Not sure what you are trying to do or what you need. From reading your
e-mail I have a feeling that gnucash can do what you need but might
have a bigger learning curve than you might like.

I am looking for a personal finance tool. I don't think that it already exists
in gnucash, but I could be wrong. If I am, kindly direct me. Otherwise, if a
nybody knows of such a tool that runs under Linux, whether it interfaces with g
nucash or not, kindly point me to it.
What I need it something that will handle short term cash flow projections for
2-3 months. It would allow entry of templates for standard recurring income an
d expenses, such as salary, mortgage, groceries but also allow items with varia
ble amounts or dates to be inserted or modified. It would always display a run
ning balance by date, alerting me when a projected balance was going negative.
There are some budgeting functions. I haven't used them but I think
they are functional.
There are scheduled transactions which can be reoccurring.
It would allow me to enter ad hoc items ("oh crap, my daughter needs to borrow
$700 this week") and modification of existing items ("I will have to reduce the
amount I am sending to savings at the ends of the month by $700"). It would a
utomatically re-sort when I changed the date of an item, or inserted a new item
with a date in between already existing items.
Ad hoc items can be entered via an account register. It sorts based on the date
.
