I think you can achieve your example with my second suggestion, ie having two 
Assets: one for you and one for your wife.

However, it think it's a good idea to follow Jason's suggestion and read 
through the concepts guide and the help manual. Both can be found here:
http://www.gnucash.org/docs.phtml

It will help you to better understand the double line accounting logic that 
GnuCash uses and how to use GnuCash in general.
