File Restoration On Startup

After saving my data file to a new file I have renamed the old file so 
it doesn't load on startup.   Now the program can't find the file and 
starts with no file.  Then I have to open the new file and wait for it 
to load.  Several times I didn't notice the old file was open and 
proceeded to enter data only to find out later I had to enter it again 
in the correct file.  I cannot get the program to remember the new file 
name.  I need to know where the pointer is and fix the problem.  
Apparently something has happened so that it no longer updates the 
latest open file.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to fix this problem?
