I can reproduce this; it seems to be an interaction with the filter... and I also see some pretty odd behavior in the gtk+ file chooser dialog test, also related to filtering. I'll research it some more and write a bug report against Gtk+.

An interesting workaround: You can in fact select another file. If you double-click it, it selects and dismisses the dialog box. If you single-click a file, then change the filter listbox from ".log" to "all" or vice-versa (there are only those two choices), the file you clicked on is then highlighted. If you want to select a different file, you have to repeat the both steps.
