I think it is definitely possible to bring them both into the same
file. You just have to set up income and expense categories that are
distinct for Athletics, and High School.
An example hierarchy may be as follows:
Assets:
High School
Checking Account
Savings Account
Athletics
Checking Account
Savings Account
Expenses
High School
Books
Facilities
Maintenance
Salaries
Athletics
Equipment
Salaries
Uniforms
Income
High School
Funding
Contributions
Athletics
Funding
Donations
Gifts
Liabilities
High School
Business Credit Card
Loan
Athletics
Business Credit Card
When you import the files in from MSN Money, you will simply need to
match the categories and accounts between the Money files and the
GNUCash file. This way, all existing transactions will be categorized
correctly, and accounts will be matched up. If you do this
beforehand, then you can ensure that there is no crossing of
transactions between High School and Athletics categories. You should
then be able to match the Asset, Expense, Income and Liability
balances for High School and Athletics, to their respective bank
balances.
I'm sure there are factors I am not considering here, but I hope this
gives you a possible path to work from.
