This is a nice overview.

Regarding the cash transaction that got pulled into your credit card
account: you can set up multiple reports in XPenser and filter expenses
to the appropriate one by use of keywords.

Me, I use it only for cash, preferring to get credit card transactions
from the company's Web site. There are a few things I do to make my life
easier.

1. At the beginning of the month, I add an entry for the amount of cash
I have on hand, like so: exp Opening Balance +75.00 foo. When XPenser
sends its "Got it!" message, it adds the current balance of the report.
That should match what I have in my pocket. If it doesn't, I have some
thinking to do.

2. At the end of the month, I download the QIF for the "New Expenses"
report and then move all of that month's entries (except "opening
balance") to a new report named after the month.

3. I also enter ATM withdrawals and other receipts of cash; just put a
plus sign before the amount.

4. I enter the SMS message in the format Payee Amount Account, i.e.,
Union Cafe 7.50 Expenses:Dining . I search-and-replace the resulting QIF
file to change "MExpenses" to "LExpenses" and "MAssets" to "LAssets".
Everything gets sorted to the right account.

5. At the end of the year, when everything balances, I move all
transactions to a single report for archiving.

Right now, I have these reports:

Archived
- 2008
- 2009

Approved
- 2010-01
- 2010-02

Active
- 2010-03 (waiting for this month's entries)
- New Expenses (the default report)

I don't really have to do #2. Any active report can be set as the
default, so I could create reports for each month and set the
appropriate one as default on the 1st of each month. I should try that.
