This is somewhat off topic, but I just saw an article which might
provide a tiny bit of insight into one kind of software design
difficulty:

http://miksovsky.blogs.com/flowstate/2010/09/every-app-has-a-scary-basement.html

The fact that the blog posting mentions complicated technical issues
with the Microsoft Money account register is actually only
tangentially related to this issue -- the account register in GnuCash
has nothing to do with the account register in Microsoft Money EXCEPT
that it is a fundamental part of the application. We can hope that
GnuCash has been designed in a way that more than a couple of people
in the world can understand how to work on it.

BUT back to the original topic --

I just dug through the bug reporting database at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/ and found a couple that represent the many
that have already been reported:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=563588

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=110716

I am not a C programmer, but the register is obviously a complicated
and essential part of the application. I presume it takes quite a bit
of effort to learn enough to 1) understand the register code and 2)
make a well-informed and robust improvement to it...

SO, unfortunately, until someone gets annoyed or motivated enough to
get past those hurdles, it's easier to point people to the FAQ.

 :-(
