Value over time report for account with shares

As far as I know, there is no way to download historical prices. 
However, I personally am manually entering quarterly prices from old
statements and using the report called Balance Sheet customized to show
only the account(s) of interest.  When the prices used are set to
nearest in time, this works for one date.  Then I would, if I wished,
paste several reports into a spreadsheet to build a chart.  If there are
simpler ways, let us know.
