My comment was offered as an option that the OP may wish to try, since 
it had worked for me in the past. Perhaps my comment was unclear.

After deleting the history file, re-launching Gnucash in the manner that 
I described resulted in a brand new history file being created (without 
entries for the deleted data files). Subsequently the menu link could be 
used, without the old history file being restored.

It was only if the first launch, after deleting the history file, was 
from a menu link that the old history file was restored. (I thought it 
possible that this is what was happening on the OP's installation.)

(I have a number of data files and use the recently used files list to 
switch among them. I experienced this phenomenon after renaming and/or 
re-locating several of those files.)
