Deleting files

The "numerous files" are backups and log files of your actions. See http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_What_are_all_these_.gnucash_and_.log_files_filling_up_my_directory.3F

If you are deleting the main file, you should delete these as well.

There are numerous files, although the Tutorial and Concepts guide talks 
about one file under which there are many accounts and many more 
transactions.   So I assumed there was one file I needed to delete and 
all the others associated with it would also be deleted.  This turned 
out not to be the case. I had to delete all the files.
