Unless you have set the preference 
Accounts -> Reverse Balanced -> Credit Accounts. 
then, as you might guess, the total column is sign reversed with resepect to 
"formal" accounting rules.

(I have that set, and was totally confused by your statement, Colin, until I 
checked the prefs!   This probably explains why I can never remember which way 
debits and credits go.....)
