thanks for your continued help.  sorry, about forgetting to mention i am using an iMac.  ran the sudo terminal command and it completed the url list, but gnu cash still says that finance quote is not installed correctly and is greyed out.  not sure how to uninstall it and reinstall on the mac.  it will not let me just take the finance quote update in the .dmg download and put in the trash and i do not want to trash the whole gnu cash install as i spent a lot of time getting everything entered and reconciled.  not sure what files i need to do a backup on to be able to get back to where i am now if i trash the current gnu cash install either  in a bit of a quandary.
