how to split social security income?

Create a Split Transaction.  Credit Income $1800, Debit Medical $100,
Debit Checking $1700.  See the Gnucash Guide for instructions on how to
enter a Split Transaction.

My recommendation: Enter it from your Checking account.  Put in your
Income account as the transfer account, put in $1700 as your Deposit,
then click the Split button.  Enter 1800 'withdrawal' from the income,
and then when you tab out of that line it will create a new one with
'100'.  Set the transfer account to your medical account and then you're
done.  Note: Never hit the 'Enter' key until you're done.  only use the
arrow keys, tab key, or mouse clicks to move around the register.
