Please remember to copy the list; using "reply all" (the double-left arrow button) works well for this.

Glad that the instructions were helpful, and sorry to learn that you lost your son. 

If the extra files have the same name and extension but have a number in the middle (e.g., myaccount.20130115143753.gnucash), they're previous versions that Gnucash keeps in case something goes wrong with the primary file (myaccount.gnucash in this example).  You probably want to keep those around; Gnucash will delete older ones as it creates newer ones, and you can set how many it keeps in Preferences. Otherwise, sure, drag them to the trash.
