My only explanation is that the software was smart enough to realise that 03/31/12 must be wrong, and although it displayed it in this format, it "realised" that something was wrong when I asked to select a date from the calendar, and switched it to 31st March 2012. 04/01/11 is a valid date either side of the Atlantic, so the calendar function accepted it verbatim in the context of a GB locale, and rendered it as 4th Jan 2011.

The problem was transient, and the GnuCash locale was already set to UK when it occurred.

When I first looked at them, the dates in GnuCash Preferences=>Accounting Period were presented in the US MM/DD/YYYY format, i.e. 04/01/2011 to 03/31/2012. Investigating this with the calendar pull-downs at the end of the date-entry windows, I found the first was presented on the calendar as 4th Jan 2011 and remained there when I closed the calendar (04/01/2011). The second was presented on the calendar as 31st March 2012, and when I closed the calendar the US-style date had been switched to UK-style (i.e. 31/03/2012).

I therefore opened the start date again, moved the calendar forward to April (the 4th), and selected the 1st of April.

These settings have survived a couple of restart cycles now, so appear to be stable.

I'll keep my eyes open for any further anomalies.
