First, in a terminal, run
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

It may say it needs to update stuff, in which case say y
If that shows any errors then post them here (copy/paste so we see it
correctly).

If no errors then what do you get from
sudo apt-get install --reinstall gnucash
