Screen fonts messed up

No, it wouldn't. GnuCash uses Gtk2, a cross-platform graphics toolkit, so its theming is completely separate from the OS's. I can't think of any reason that upgrading to Yosemite would make any difference at all; what might is installing another Gtk app which rudely set the theme globally. Look for a .gtkrc or .gtkrc-2.0 in your home directory and if you find one, rename it to something else. Finder won't show it to you, you'll have to use Terminal (ls ~/.gtkrc*).
