Have you read the Gnucash Tutorial and Concepts Guide at
http://www.gnucash.org/viewdoc.phtml?doc=guide ? It has a section on splits
and how to enter them ? Also section 6.4 of the Help Guide has a detailed
step by step explanation of how to enter splits - same url as before.

One thing you need to keep in mind when entering split transactions is not
to hit the Enter key until you are done setting up everything, use the Tab
key (I think from memory Shift/Tab works to go backwards) to move around
the split transaction line entries.
