Linux Mint, I think defers to the upstream release of Ubuntu for its version of Gnucash. Linux Mint 17 is based on Ubuntu 14 LTS and Mint 18 is based on Ubuntu 16 LTS. 

You could try using the GetDeb repositories if your release isn't current enough.
