try Transaction Report
* accounts / accounts - choose income+expense accts
* display / subtotal-table - enabled
* sorting / primary-key - account name
* sorting / primary-subtotal - enabled
* sorting / secondary-key - date
* sorting / secondary subtotal - monthly
if the subtotals are not satisfactory, swap primary/secondary as above
