It’s not quite correct. Chrome OS started off as a fork of Linux with the Chrome browser as its GUI, but it’s grown a bit. See  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrome_OS <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrome_OS>.

If you search the web for “gnome on chrome os” you’ll get a number of sites that purport to facilitate running Linux applications. AFAIK no one here has tested any of them, and some may require developer skills. Good luck.
