I would be extremely surprised if it ever becomes possible for gnucash to participate in the new bank connection realm.

The Open Banking initiative is only open in the sense of business-to-business. The banks will only talk to authorized 
API implementations. And becoming authorized means keeping the banks and API consortium happy. That takes money as well as other hoops to jump through.
