Diana,
I usually migrate to the latest version of GnuCash within a week of its
release and have been doing so since around 2010. I also build GnuCash
from the source code on Linux ( and have previously built it on Windows
as well) mainly so I don't have to wait for the latest version to be
released by the OS packagers.
The downloaded Windows version of GnuCash is usually the latest
release and it will usually uninstall previous versions during the
installation procedure. I did use GnuCash on Windows 10 and 11 as well
until a couple of years ago, sharing the same data file between GnuCash
on Linux and Windows. I have never encountered any problems.
Occasionally there may a glitch with the first version of a major
release, but those sort of problems are usually fixed very rapidly in a
quick second release by John Ralls and are not usually with the core
functionality in any case.
The main thing with upgrading is just to take it step by step
methodically. Printing out a full balance sheet and checking that the
balances don't change after each upgrade step is also useful for
detecting problems. If you can it, is probably a good idea to suspend
entering new data until you have completed the upgrade to a recent
version and have it running happily (although perhaps a bit more slowly
on anolder machines).
Good Luck
