GC 2.4.10 installed under Ubuntu 12.04 LTS doesn't run

Just to say that for me GC installed on Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop 32 bits
from the standard repository works fine.  It does sound rather like a
missing dependency when installed on Ubuntu server.  On the other hand
if gnome shell is not working how can any GUI application work?
