Regarding the preferences that don't stick, you may also want to check 
what the Windows %HOME% parameter is set to. Gnucash uses the value of 
this parameter as the base path to store preferences. In another thread 
on this mailing list a user discovered %HOME% referred to a directory 
that was read-only and that turned out to be the reason he couldn't save 
his preferences.
